Sue is driven from her unconventional relationship with Jude back into a more traditional marriage with her former husband, Richard Phillotson. A sorrow laden and drunken Jude is coerced into once again living with his first wife Arabella, however, the increasingly ill stonemason is still obsessed with Sue. Coughing uncontrollably and staggering into the pouring rain, Jude travels to Marygreen one final time to implore Sue to join him in renewing their life together.
