Jude agrees to care for the child even though he hadn't previously known of Juey's existence. The family's life is further complicated when Sue becomes pregnant. Too jittery to wed, Jude and Sue soon become social pariahs in their judgmental society. Unable to find employment as a stonemason working on ecclesiastical buildings, Jude and his small brood decide to move to the country in hopes of finding work as an itinerant mason on secular buildings.
