Masterpiece Theatre Jude has been employed in Marygreen as an itinerant stonemason since his rejection at Cardinal College. He meets a young cleric who encourages him to seek entry into a theological college in Melchester. Jude enthusiastically purs... (more)ues this course, in part because he desires to see his free-spirited cousin Sue who is studying there. As the two become reacquainted, Sue reveals that she once lived in London for eighteen months with a Christminster undergraduate. When her liberated attitudes force her expulsion from college, she seeks refuge not with her fiance, the schoolmaster Richard Phillotson, but with Jude, who must resist his passionate desire for her. Their innocent but conspicuous night together, however, causes Jude to be expelled from his lodging, and he returns temporarily to Christminster. Phillotson asks Sue to marry him at once but she delays her response, insisting she must first receive counsel from her cousin. Soon after arriving in Christminster, Jude meets his wayward wife Arabella in a pub, who informs him that she has abandoned her second husband in Australia and asks Jude to spend the night with her.
